San Joaquin Hills Reservoir Conversion

Butier Engineering, Inc. provided construction management and inspection services during conversion of the existing San Joaquin Hills Reservoir from use as a domestic water reservoir to a recycled water reservoir. The conversion project consisted of three separate prime contracts, including the reservoir storage project; modification of an existing booster pumping station; construction of transmission mains to connect the reservoir and booster pumping stations to the District's distribution system; and construction of a new booster pumping station, flow control facilities, and chlorine disinfection system. Butier provided Construction Program Management Services for all three contracts.

The project required close and extensive coordination with outside entities, including the Irvine Company, the City of Irvine, County of Orange, Southern California Edison, Irvine Community Development Company, and other utilities.

PROJECT CHALLENGES

This was a high-profile, politically-sensitive project due to the size and location within a canyon that is abutted by multi-million dollar family residences, schools, places of worship, and high-end commercial properties.
